SIGHTSEEING IN ISFJORD
Esmark glacier, Barentsburg and Grumant
Isfjord is the second largest fjord on Svalbard, and here we find three of the settlements on the island. We will sail from Longyearbyen, towards the Russian settlement Barentsburg. The trip in Isfjord takes us by glaciers and cultural heritage for earlier settlements.
First stop is Esmark Glacier, a glacier that slowly erodes in the fjord. We might also see some of the wildlife here on the ice. If we are lucky, we might even see the polar bear walking by, king of the arctic.
On the other side of the fjord we sail towards Barentsburg. Here we will have a guided trip of the settlement, by an English speaking local guide. There will also be time to discover by your self. We recommend a stop by the post office, souvenir shop and the local brewery.
The guide will tell you about the wildlife and history, and on our way back we will pass by the ruins of the old sovjet mining settlement of Grumant.
