Skien Lock is the entrance to the Telemark Canal. 5-meter lift, 1 chamber, waiting dock, and ticket sales. Sail through historic locks from 1861.

Welcome to Skien Lock (Skien sluse)—the very first lock system you encounter as you embark on your journey up the world-famous Telemark Canal. Here, you will be warmly welcomed by experienced lock keepers who provide valuable information, guidance, and training for your continued voyage.



Located below the lock facility is a large, convenient waiting dock. Boaters are recommended to moor here, walk up to speak with the lock keepers, and purchase tickets for the journey further up the canal.

  • Bascule Bridge: A drawbridge crosses over the canal and is raised for sailboats or vessels with tall superstructures.


  • Ticket Sales: Tickets for the journey up the Telemark Canal can be purchased directly from the lock keepers at Skien Lock.




History of Skien Lock (From 1861 to Today)



Skien Lock was completed in 1861 as part of the Norsjø-Skien Canal—the oldest section of the Telemark Canal system (which comprises Skien Lock and Løveid Locks).



When the canal opened, it enabled vessels to navigate all the way from the ocean to what later became the town of Notodden. This waterway proved vital to Norwegian industrial history:




  • Industrial Breakthrough: The canalization of the river was essential for Norsk Hydro to establish its very first factory at Notodden in 1905, enabling the transport of raw materials in and finished products out to global markets.


  • Technological Evolution: In 1861, locking operations were performed manually, and the chamber walls were built of hand-hewn stone. Today, Skien Lock is a modernized facility featuring steel gates, smooth chamber walls, and hydraulic operations.


  • Heritage Landmark: Standing alongside the lock is the heritage-protected PM5 (Paper Machine No. 5) factory building from 1882, a proud testament to Skien's paper manufacturing history.
