Sogn Art Centre is situated in Lærdal Cultural Centre at Lærdalsøyri, together with The Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre and Laksen Café.
Sogn Art Centre opened in 2011 and houses the Gjesme Collection. Just before his death, the Lærdal artist Hans Gjesme (1904–1993) donated his life's work to the Municipality of Lærdal. This led to the establishment of the Gjesme Gallery in 1998. The collection includes a large number of landscapes and portraits, as well as sketches and finished works in a variety of techniques, including drawing, painting, watercolour, pastel and sculpture.
Sogn Art Centre – Experience Local Art from the Past 100 Years
During the summer of 2026, Sogn Art Centre presents two exhibitions showcasing both the artistic heritage and the contemporary art scene of the region. In "Hans Gjesme – Highlights", visitors can experience a wide selection of the most representative works from Hans Gjesme's long artistic career. The group exhibition "Where We Are" features contemporary artists with strong ties to Sogn and Fjordane.
The exhibition "Hans Gjesme – Highlights" presents well-known motifs from Lærdal, including landscapes, portraits, urban scenes and depictions of people at work. It offers visitors an insight into an artistic career spanning more than 70 years, whose work continues to hold an important place both locally and nationally.
In "Where We Are", presented by the Sogn og Fjordane Artists' Centre, seven artists explore themes such as contemporary life, belonging, change and what it means to be "here". The exhibition provides a snapshot of today's regional art scene and invites visitors to reflect on art, everyday life and a sense of place.
For those looking for an art experience that combines local heritage with fresh perspectives, Sogn Art Centre is a natural stop when visiting Lærdal in the summer of 2026.
The summer exhibitions open on 19 June 2026. "Where We Are" runs until 25 September 2026, while "Hans Gjesme – Highlights" remains on display until 30 April 2028. During the summer season, the art centre is open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The entire site is easily accessible, with step-free access throughout. Accessible toilet facilities are available in the café. The art centre shares its premises with the Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre, and a combined admission ticket is available for both attractions. Laksen Bakery & Café, located in the same building, serves freshly baked pastries and pizza. We recommend visiting both while you are in Lærdal.
