Sognefjellshytta is a staffed, privately owned tourist cabin in Lom municipality. The cabin is located at 1,400 meters above sea level, at the highest point on Sognefjellsvegen – Northern Europe’s highest mountain pass. The place is a perfect starting point for summit hikes, ski trips, and glacier guiding to Smørstabbtindane, Fannaråken, and Hurrungane – from Easter to September.
Sognefjellshytta is located by Fantesteinsvatnet along county road 55, Sognefjellsvegen—and usually opens for Easter, when the road is cleared after the winter closure.
Sognefjellshytta is a central hub for trips in the area, with marked routes to neighboring cabins such as Skogadalsbøen, Krossbu, and Fannaråken, as well as opportunities for glacier and cave trekking. In spring, cross-country ski trails are groomed outside the cabin, used by both national teams, recreational skiers, and ski enthusiasts who want to combine training with mountain experiences.
Sognefjellsvegen was built in the mid-1930s, and at that time two log cabins were put up for the construction workers at the site where the tourist cabin stands today. After World War II, the cabins were used as a café, and in 1947 Torkjell Bakkeberg took over and opened a tourist cabin. In the first years it was called Fantesteinshytta, after a distinctive rock formation nearby, but later it was given the name Sognefjellshytta. The cabin has been rebuilt and expanded several times, most recently in 2003 and 2015, and today has 80 beds.
