The Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. The King among fjords lies in the middle of Fjord Norway and stretches more than 200 kilometres inwards to the foot of the Jotunheimen Mountain.

The dramatic and friendly landscape claims to be one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. Sognefjorden in a Nutshell combines a boat trip on the Sognefjord with a spectacular train journey on the popular Flåm Railway.

The trip takes approximately 10 hours and starts with the express boat from Bergen. On board you will have views of the magnificent mountains along the Sognefjord and Aurlandsfjord, where high up you can see small mountain farms clinging to the sides of the mountains.

The final stop of the expressboat is Flåm where you will disembark. Flåm is a charming small village surrounded by steep mountainsides, cascading waterfalls and narrow valleys. It is lovely just to stroll around the village, or you can visit the Flåm Railway Museum.

From Flåm, the trip continues on the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest normal gauge railways in the world. The platform is beside the quay and is easy to find. The 20-km-long train ride is a fantastic journey that offers panoramic views of some of the wildest and most magnificent mountain scenery Norway has to offer, including the famous Kjosfossen waterfall. The train ride lasts for roughly an hour.

At Myrdal station, you change trains to Bergen Railway, which takes you back to Bergen. Bergen Railway is the highest altitude railway in Northern Europe, and around 100 kilometres of the line run through wild mountain terrain.

The tour can be taken in any direction. You can start by boat from Strandkaiterminalen, or you can start by train from the train station in Bergen.

Accessibility:

This journey begins with a boat departing from the Bergen city center, conveniently located near the Tourist Information Center. The terminal is easily accessible with no steps and direct access from the road.

The boat ride to Flåm in the Sognefjord takes approximately five hours. This tour utilizes public transport, which in Norway is generally accessible for wheelchair users. The boat between Bergen and Flåm is equipped with a ramp for easy boarding.

After disembarking in Flåm, you change to the Flåm Railway, which takes you to Myrdal. The town center in Flåm is small and flat, making it easy to navigate from the boat to the train within a few minutes. At Myrdal you will change trains to return to Bergen. The train station in Bergen is wheelchair-friendly, with level ground allowing easy exit.

Accessible toilets are available throughout the journey, including on the boat, the Flåm Railway, Myrdal station, and the train from Myrdal to Bergen.

When booking the tour, inform the tour operator Fjord Tours in advance if you are traveling with an electric wheelchair. This will ensure proper seat arrangements on the boat, the Flåm Railway, and the Vy train. (No need to inform about manual wheelchairs)
