Søndre Park in Lillehammer is a charming oasis that is considered the city's most idyllic green area. Here you will find majestic trees, flowering shrubs, beautiful walking paths, benches for rest, water mirrors, art sculptures, a classical music pavilion and a cozy café. The park, which was originally designed more as a promenade than an activity park, is today an arena for a wide range of events and experiences both summer and winter.
Designed between 1885 and 1894 by the "Society for the Welfare of the City of Lillehammer", the park is inspired by contemporary European styles. Since then, it has undergone natural changes in line with changing eras and needs. The park's structure has a central axis that stretches between Lillehammer Church and the Higher Almueskole, with a fountain, stairs and pond beautifully placed along this line. The sculpture "Leda and the Swan" and the monuments that stand here reinforce the park's historical character.
In the late 1800s, bird species were introduced as part of the zeitgeist, with ducks, swans, and even eagle chicks among the park's residents. Although the animals and their small houses are gone, traces of this era can still be found, such as the falconry cave.
In 1933, the iconic park café was added, built with the modern ideals of light, air and space in mind. Open grassy areas were created, and it was allowed to use the lawn for recreation. Over time, some of the oldest trees have been removed or replaced, but the park still houses about 35 tree species – many with roots dating back to its time of establishment.
The park owner has been careful to preserve the area's unique charm. Since the renovation of the café and new lighting in 2009, the park has become even more inviting without losing its original expression. Even though some old trees are about to give up, the management makes sure to plant new ones. In this way, they ensure that Søndre Park remains a lush oasis for generations to come.
Experience this historic gem for yourself – a great destination for leisurely walks or a cup of coffee in the middle of Lillehammer's vibrant urban environment.
