Steinkjer Church – A Testament to Resilience and Artistry

Steinkjer Church stands as the third church on this historic site. The original church, built in 1865, was lost in the great town fire of 1900, while its successor from 1902 was destroyed during the bombings of 1940.

The present church, designed by architect Olav Platou, was completed in 1965, marking the final chapter of Steinkjer’s post-war reconstruction. Constructed from concrete, wood, and glass, its neo-cathedral design is characterized by a striking monumental front wall and a freestanding tower soaring 38 metres into the sky.

A Blend of Modernity and Tradition

While the exterior reflects modern architectural principles, the entrance leads into a worship hall inspired by early Christian basilicas—grand columned halls where the heavenly king welcomes his earthly congregation.

Weidemann’s Stained Glass Windows

A defining feature of the church is the eleven stained glass windows, created by Jacob Weidemann, with glasswork by Annar Millidahl. The striking blue light filtering through the windows symbolizes divine love, a theme central to Weidemann’s artistic vision. Additional works by Weidemann can be seen at Steinkjer Town Hall.

Abstract Altarpiece & Bronze Crucifix

At the heart of the church is its altarpiece, naturally framed by the architecture. The centrepiece is a bronze crucifix sculpted by Sivert Donali, who also designed the church’s main entrance door handle. Behind it, Weidemann’s five-metre-high abstract painting in deep red hues dominates the choir wall, inspired by a willow tree over his grandfather’s grave.

Flanking the altarpiece, two narrow stained glass window columns blend shades of blue, red, yellow, and green, adding to the church’s unique interplay of light and colour.

A harmonious fusion of modern architecture and sacred tradition, Steinkjer Church stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, faith, and artistic excellence.
