Stoltzekleiven in Bergen city center is a steep paved trail and stairs with approximately 908 steps up to Sandviksfjellet. Stoltzekleiven is one of the most popular trails in Bergen.
Enjoy this hard but short popular hike from Fjellveien up Stoltzekleiven.
The hike is divided into two parts with a challenging and an easy leg. The first part of the hike is mostly steep stone stairs. The more you climb, the better the view you get. The trip is suitable for both children and adults, but it is not recommended in winter when it can be slippery.
You will find the start of Stoltzekleiven by Fjellveien 13, about 30 minutes’ walk from the city center.
From the top of Stoltzekleiven you have beautiful views of Sandviken and Byfjorden.
The trail is quite narrow and is a one-way street going up. From the top you have several options but the most common route is to continue to Mount Fløyen.
From the top continue straight ahead a couple of minutes until you come to a lake. Do not go over the bridge but turn right. From there, follow signs to Fløyen. It takes about 40 minutes. From Fløyen you have stunning views over the city and from here you can take the Fløibanen funicular down to the center or walk down (40 minutes). Follow signs to City center and Fløysvingene and you will come down by Fløibanen’s bottom station.
Directions (by foot) from St. Mary's Church near Bryggen:
By the crossroad at St Mary's Church and Dreggsallmenningen turn left into Øvregaten. Cross the road and walk into Nordre Kleivsmauet which leads you to Støle gaten. Turn left into Stølegaten. After a few meters, turn right into Ladegårdsgaten. Then turn right in Abslon Beyers gate. Then right onto Øvre Sandviksveien. Turn right into Persbakken and cross over the football field on your left. Follow Christinegård until it becomes Fjellveien. (Keep to the left when the road forks). After a few minutes you will find the start point on your right hand side with a big sign.
Directions (by bus):
Take the bus in the direction Sandviken / Åsane from Torget, just across the street from the Tourist Information.
Get off at the stop called Ludebryggen. Go in between the low block of flats and follow a path and steps uphill crossing Amalie Skrams vie, Sudmannsvei and Sandvikslien, before you get to Fjellveien. Turn left and you'll see the start point. The walk from the bus stop will take you about 10 minutes.
Estimated time: about 30 minutes up to the top. Then it depends which way you walk down. If you walk to Fløyen it is about 40 minutes to walk.
Length: the track winds its way to the top and is about 900 meters long. (Sandviksfjellet is located at 417 masl)
Starting point: Fjellveien 13.
