On the south side of Rødshue on Kirkøy, in a landscape scattered with remnants of old quarry activity, lies the sculpture park StenKunstHvaler. It is an outdoor exhibition, easily accessible all year round.
The sculptures are the works of renowned artists from several countries who have formed from the materials they found on site a sculpture that relates to the coastal landscape. In this majestic scenery there is a fascinating convergence between the remains of the old stone industry and today's artists working in the medium of stone. The sculpture park was built up over a sequence of years, a new work being commissioned every summer from a sculptor of international standing, each leaving behind a monument that will stand the test of time.
The park is the initiative of Hvaler Fine Arts Society who wished to stimulate contacts with international art and culture, while celebrating and prolonging local historical traditions in the quarrying and working of stone that formed this landscape during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The artists represented are
Allesandro Stenico (Italy, 2005),
Makoto Fujiwara (Japan, 2006),
Vegard Hanve (Norway, 2007),
Ann Carlsson Korneev (Sweden, 2008)
Gunn Harbitz (Norway, 2009).
