This stretch of road, from Suleskar in Sirdal to Brokke in Setesdal, is known as Southwest Norway’s highest altitude road connection and takes you over the mountains to Dalen and Høydalsmo in Telemark. Follow E39 to Ålgård, then drive Fv 45 past Dirdal in Høgsfjord and through enchanting Hunnedalen. On the way here you could stop at Byrkjedalstunet for some good, traditional Norwegian food. An advisable detour is to visit Gloppedalsura scree, before travelling on to Sirdal and over the alpine range, to Brokke in Setesdal. From there you can go to Rotemo, where the road Fv 45 will take you through the mountains and down to Dalen and continue past Eidsborg stavkirke to Høydalsmo and the Haukeli road E134 . The scenery is varied and dramatic, with the road’s highest point reaching 1050 m.
