Sylvringen – Explore Vik's Cultural Heritage
Experience Vik through history.
Join Sylvringen on a journey through Vik’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The tour begins in Vikøyri, home to one of Norway’s best-preserved beach-dweller settlements. From there, we visit the iconic Hopperstad Stave Church and the historic Hove Stone Church. Along the way, we pass ancient burial mounds and other fascinating landmarks that tell the story of Vik through the centuries.
You will also have the opportunity to taste the local specialty, Gamalost, a traditional cheese with roots dating back to the Viking Age.
The tour includes a visit to the house of Voss Anders, a small historic building that offers a glimpse into everyday life in times gone by.
A Walk to Remember
As we stroll through Vikøyri, you will wander among charming traditional houses and boathouses that make up the historic beach-dweller settlement. We will even step inside one of the small homes that has remained virtually unchanged since it was abandoned many years ago.
A visit to Hopperstad Stave Church is an absolute highlight. Dating from the 12th century, it is one of Norway’s oldest stave churches and a remarkable example of Norway’s unique contribution to world architecture.
Nearby stands Hove Stone Church, built during the same period. While it may not rival Europe’s grand cathedrals in size, it is home to a unique Madonna sculpture found nowhere else in Norway, making it well worth a visit.
During the walk, you will also hear about the discoveries made during archaeological excavations of several local burial mounds, providing fascinating insights into the region’s past.
The tour includes a tasting of Gamalost, which is still produced at the local dairy using a recipe that dates back to Viking times. The cheese is served with locally produced raspberry juice.
We hope this experience leaves you with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation of Vik’s history, culture, and natural beauty.
