Tønsåsen Artillery Battery

  •  /  km From You

Tønsåsen is the name of the steep rock formation situated close to Lånke skole (school), approx. 2 km east of Hell centre (along road nr. 23).

During the 19th century disagreements concerning the union (Norway and Sweden) frequently arose, and in 1905 "Stortinget" decided to leave the union with Sweden. A military conflict was expected and as early as 1890 Norway built several fortresses along the Swedish border. There was a real threat that Sweden would use militargy power to keep the union together.

Also at Tønsåsen a fortress was built, facing east, in case a Swedish invasion should come down the Stjørdal valley. "Tønsåsen Batteri" had eight 7,5 cm French cannons from 1898. Surprisingly Tønsåsen was said to have the most advanced military equipment in Europe at that time.

On the plateau facing south in the middle of the hillside there are rock carvings dating from early Stone Age, which means that they are about 5-6000 years old. The carvings were made when sea level was 40 to 45 metres above todays level. The bay by the plateau must have provided excellent hunting and fishing, as the carvings show.

On the northern side of the hill there is a steep rock which the climbers from Trondheim have developed into a well known climbing area, even internationally. Every summer climbers from several countries assemble at "Hell Klatrefelt" to challenge some of the 80-90 paths with different levels of difficulty.

Tønsåsen is a beautiful place with hiking paths set in a breathtaking scenery (128 meter above sea level). Today birch, pine trees and scrub have conquered the fortress area. The buildings are gone, but the concrete walls overgrown with moss still tell the story of the resistance of the Norwegian people.
