Porsgrunn
At Porsgrund's Porcelain Factory, you can see how porcelain painters decorate porcelain, including the world-famous straw pattern.
Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik is known for its exquisite craftsmanship and timeless design. Few patterns are as iconic as the hand-painted Bogstad Strå—a delicate, cobalt blue motif affectionately known as the “eternity pattern.” For over 130 years, it has adorned Norwegian porcelain and remains a proud symbol of our heritage.
A Timeless Design
The straw pattern has its roots in 18th-century Europe, originally developed by the Meissen porcelain factory in Germany. Inspired by traditional Chinese porcelain, the design features stylized flowers and vines, painted in a distinctive cobalt blue. Since 1887, it has been one of our most beloved and recognizable collections.
What makes the Bogstad Strå truly special? Every single piece is hand-painted by skilled artisans. While the core design stays the same, each item is one-of-a-kind—subtly unique thanks to the artist’s hand.
Meet the Straw Painters
Painting the straw pattern is a true art form—requiring years of training, precision, and an eye for detail. Only our most experienced painters handle this work, and each brushstroke must be perfect. A single mistake means starting from scratch. That’s why every finished piece carries not only quality, but also the painter’s initials—an elegant signature of their craftsmanship.
