About the Tour

Åbøbyen is a living historical example of industrial history and class differences in Norway. The stories of Åbøbyen and the industrial workers who lived here are showcased in the Industrial Workers Museum. The museum is located in the heart of historic Åbøbyen in Sauda. Sauda boasts a rich industrial history tied to hydropower and the smelting plant.


Meeting Point:

We will meet at Folkets Hus in Sauda and walk together through Åbøbyen to the museum, allowing you to experience and explore this vibrant industrial history firsthand.

The Industrial Workers Museum is located at Haakonsgate 51-53 and is housed in a former four-family residence. Here, you’ll gain valuable insight into the lives of industrial workers.

The museum is divided into two apartments that illustrate how families lived in different eras. One apartment is furnished as it would have been in the 1920s, offering a unique look into how modern it was for its time. The other apartment is furnished in the style of the 1960s, showing the evolution of living conditions over time.

The exhibition "Under the Smoke – Life in Åbøbyen" tells the story of the lives of industrial workers employed at the factory, the everyday lives of housewives, and what it was like growing up in Åbøbyen. You will gain insights into the factory’s history and significance, as well as the surrounding local community.
