Right on the edge of the Arctic Circle, beneath the Svartisen glacier and the Saltfjellet mountains, lies Mo i Rana – the largest town in Helgeland. When snow blankets the Arctic Circle town, winter lovers come alive, ready for all the season has to offer. Adventurers can head for summits like Tortenviktinden and Høgtuva, while those seeking calm can enjoy quiet evening walks toward Appelsinhaugen beneath the shifting northern lights. Cross-country ski trails begin just behind the town, and Skillevollen Alpine Centre offers fast-paced runs just minutes from the centre.
Need a break from the cold? Get cosy indoors with hearty local dishes at one of the town’s welcoming restaurants, explore Sámi culture at Aernie, or warm up with art and performances at Nordland Theatre, Rana Museum, or one of the many local venues.
A Town for Families
For families looking to fill their holiday with activities and experiences, Mo i Rana is a great find. Right in the centre, Vitensenter Nordland invites children of all ages to experiment, learn, and play their way through the wonders of science. Just outside town, you’ll find indoor climbing walls and bouldering areas for all levels at Rana Climbing Centre. A little further north, physical challenges await in Northern Norway’s first Høyt & Lavt adventure park at Krokstrand.
The caves are a natural favourite for families too – with Setergrotta and Grønligrotta offering everything from child-friendly, well-built, and lit paths to more adventurous routes for those who want to explore further. And when the weather doesn’t play along, there’s still plenty to do: take a forest walk in the rain to Bredek, get close to the mighty Svartisen, or stay dry with a cinema visit, a museum trip, or another round at the science centre.
