Before steamers, tunnels and tourism the Jostedalsbreen Glacier was the main trade route between Nordfjord, Sunnfjord and Sogn. With hard work and high risk the farmers and traders brought cattle, food and important tools across the glacier. The women often found a man from the other side of the glacier, married and started a family. People often traveled across the glacier for a party. Today, glaciers, mountains and fjords are a pleasure for us to experience spectacular scenery on skis or by foot. Join Breogfjell on an alpine skiing tour on one of the traditional routes on Jostedalsbreen Glacier.
Today, the routes across the Jostedalsbreen offer world class in ski touring. Breogfjell Mountain Guides have put together a tour over three days from Jostedalen Valleyr to the glacier plateau (via Mt. Lodalskåpa (2083masl) for the fittest groups) and Mt. Skåla (1843 masl) in Loen. This trip goes through exciting glaciers and steep mountains. And what could be better than waking in the Skålatårnet Tower at 1843 masl, and the only thing you have to do is to run one of Europe's longest continuous descents, down to the fjord!
The Glacier Route (Breruta) day by day
We start from Bjørnstegane in Jostedalen Valley and go to the Fåbergstølen mountain farm and up Lodalsbreen Glacier to the foot of Mt. Lodalskåpa. From there a long descent awaits, to Bødalsætra mountain farm via Brattebakkane (steep hills) or Bødalsbreen Glacier. Here await dinner and a good night's sleep at the Erkehytta cabin. During this day we have completed approximately 1600 hight meters rise and almost equally long descents. If we have time we move with ice axes and crampons around Mt. Lodalskåpa in exciting terrain on the east side, to the ordinary route where we climb the last meters to the top of Mt. Lodalskåpa 2083 masl. We have moved us all the 27 km that day.
Early start to catch the morning crust! The tour starts very steep via Tindefjellbreen Glacier to Bings brekuppel (glacier dome) at 1848 m. Here we run down Tundraskardsbreen Glacier, about 1850 hight meters, where we put on the skins again, 700 hightmetersr to Havaldetreet at 1776 masl. From this peak we get another run of approximately 700 meters before we again put on skins and head for Skåla 1848 masl. Here we sleep in the tower after a day in which we have carried out a total of 2840 meters hight incline and about 1600 meters in descent. We have moved 15 km that day.
We enjoy breakfast and wait for the perfect temperature in the snow. Today we'll run down one of Europe's finest descents. And the best part is that we need not go a single meter uphill. In good conditions, we get a total of approximately 1,800 meters descent! We normally arrive at 2 p.m.
The program can be changed due to weather conditions.
This is the most demanding multi-day alpine ski trip in Norway. You must master steep skiing on varied lead, and using ice axes and crampons. You must be in very good physical condition to carry out the whole trip.
