The green corridor - to Varden viewpoint

Explore Gamle Vardeveg to Varden (407 m above sea level)

The hike to Varden begins at the quay in Molde city center and takes you through the "green corridor." From the sea at Reknes, you walk to the baroque villa Chateauet, continue through Reknes Park, and up to the "Pavilion" at the viewpoint Rekneshaugen. The nature trail continues through the Romsdalsmuseet to the viewpoint Varden (407 m above sea level).

There are signs from the corner of Scandic Hotel Alexandra with blue symbols all the way to Varden. Along the way, there are also distance markers showing how far you have left to the top. This nature experience takes you up Storlia to the spectacular viewpoint Varden. At Varden, 407 meters above sea level, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Molde panorama with 222 majestic mountain peaks.

Equipment and time required

This is a classic hike in Moldemarka, ideal for hikers of all ages. No special equipment is needed—regular running shoes are sufficient. The hike can start right in the center of Molde, and the well-marked trail takes you through beautiful surroundings. There are several rest benches along the way where you can enjoy the view, but the most impressive panoramic view awaits you at the top of Varden. Estimated hiking time is about 1.5 hours up and 45 minutes down. In winter, this path is usually tracked by a small snow machine, so spikes or good winter shoes are recommended.

Explore Moldemarka

If you want to extend your hike, there are several nice trails that take you further into Moldemarka from the top of Varden. A recommended route is to follow the trail from Varden to Skihytta and then down the gravel road back to Vardevegen. This allows you to explore more of the beautiful nature in the area.

Flexible starting points

The hike to Varden can start from various locations, including Molde city center, Romsdalsmuseet, the parking lot at Hatlelitunnelen/Grua, or the residential area Kringsjå. Old Vardeweg takes you through fine pine forests up the slope, and along the way, you pass Storlihytta, a DNT cabin with services on certain days. Further up towards the top of Varden, the hiking path meets the road (Vardevegen) to Varden.
