The Heiberg Collections/ Sogn Folkemuseum, Kaupanger

De Heibergske Samlinger – Sogn Folkemuseum is an open air museum with almost 40 authentic historical buildings, ranging from the middle ages to the 20th. century.
Welcome to one of Norway’s largest and oldest cultural history museums! Here you can wander through an open-air museum with over 30 historical buildings, showing how people in Sogn lived from the 1500s to the present day.
The open-air museum also offers a varied cultural landscape, with biodiverse hayfields, pollard trees, fields and pastures. In the museum’s large main building you will find interesting exhibitions related to agriculture, crafts, textiles, food and drink, and an exhibition about Norwegian holidays.
Guided tours and family activities:
During the summer season, you may join guided tours where you can learn about life in Sogn, and participate in feeding the animals on the farm, where children can get to know old Norwegian livestock breeds such as cows, sheep and pigs. For our youngest visitors, there is a play area, nature trails and a fairytale forest, where they can frolic and experience nature and culture up close. A special exhibition for children and youths shows how children’s everyday life was at the beginning of the 1900s century, compared to young people in Sogn in the year 2000.
Events:
The museum hosts various events throughout the season with traditional activities, crafts or farm work. You will find an overview of upcoming events on our website.
Food, drinks and gift shop:
After a day filled with experiences, you can visit the gift shop and Café Heiberg, which offers hot and cold drinks, simple lunch options, and fresh homemade pastries. In the shop you will find gift items, traditional toys and handicrafts, among other things.
Season:
The museum is open all year, with the exception of January, Christmas, Easter, and a few other select dates. Please visit our website for further information on opening hours.
Accessibility:
The main building has an elevator covering all three floors. Information boards have been made accessible to visually impaired visitors. The open-air museum has varied terrain, including some hilly areas where mobility may be limited. Most historical buildings are unfortunately not accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
A short 5-minute drive from The Heiberg Collection, you’ll find the Sogn Fjord Museum – which helps bring fjord culture and boatbuilding traditions to life. A visit there is included in your Sogn Museum of Cultural History ticket. If you plan to visit Kaupanger, we also recommend stopping by the Kaupanger Stave Church, Norway’s oldest stave church.
