Måløy raid center is a war-historical knowledge center that addresses the dramatic storytelling and war history of its first allied full-scale operation.
The center offers audio guides in English, German, French, Spanish, Italien and Norwegian.
Our six-part historical exhibition tells a story of personal experiences, international politics, bravery, military strategy, compassion, local history, resilience, unexpected heroism, touching reunions and much more. Måløyraidsenteret was honoured to receive Kinn district council’s architecture prize in 2020, and the building is central to the visitor experience. Don’t forget to look up: the façade windows are part of the exhibition.
Welcome to a unique visitor centre that brings Måløy’s wartime history to life.
Early morning, 27 December 1941: the Christmas peace is shattered by a loud bang. In ten minutes, more than 560 British bombs fall on Måløy. For the next six hours, it's total war: aerial bombs, street fighting and artillery fire from warships. Through the deafening racket: the high-pitched sound of bagpipes.
Original pictures from the raid and metres of original film are displayed in a vivid exhibition, which has touched thousands of visitors. The displays also showcase original uniforms, Mad Jack's bagpipes and Martin Linge's pistol, accompanied by the smells of Christmas baking and explosions.
As well as the exhibition on the Måløy raid, there are displays on Martin Linge, the Linge Company and the daring Shetland Bus missions. Only one Norwegian soldier fell during the Måløy Raid, and that was Captain Martin Linge, the leader of Norwegian Independent Company No. 1, later known as Kompani Linge.
Martin Linge was an actor, socially engaged, and passionate about travel. His presence and decisiveness in the early days of the war took him to London, where he became a link between the Allies and Norwegians who wanted to contribute to the war effort. He also found love again in a stairwell during an air raid in London.
The centre is located at the heart of the town, with parking in the square and several good cafés nearby.
Groups can arrange visits outside opening hours, call +47 915 24 518 or +47 948 16 904.
