The Mining Museum - Litlabø

A mining museum out of the ordinary – in the heart of Sunnhordland! At Litlabø on the island of Stord, you can hop aboard the mining train and head deep into the mountain to explore the fascinating history of Stordø Kisgruber, where pyrite was extracted for more than a hundred years.
Discover one of Norway’s most unique mining experiences at Litlabø in Sunnhordland. The mining operations here began in 1865 and lasted until 1968, forming the heart of the local community around A/S Stordø Kisgruber. Today, the Litlabø Mining Museum preserves this fascinating industrial heritage for future generations.
Known locally as Gruo, Litlabø offers a wealth of history – from geological wonders and technical innovation to social history and well-preserved mining tunnels and buildings.
What to Experience at Gruo – Litlabø Mining MuseumTake a journey back in time as you explore the original mine shaft tower and hoist house, both of which were bombed during a WWII sabotage mission. These powerful reminders tell the story of wartime resistance in Norway.
You can also visit the green park areas and a restored workers’ residence, complete with original furniture showing how families lived during the mining era.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, nature lover, or visiting with kids, Gruo is a great destination for all ages.
