About The Northern Lights Company
Company based in Vesterålen, Northern Norway, The Northern Lights Company is the brainchild of British Aurora Chaser & award-winning photographer, Chris Percival. Chris has been managing, guiding and operating Northern Lights tours in Northern Norway for over 15 years. His knowledge, experience and long-lasting relationships with local activity and accommodation providers in the region has allowed him create truly unique Northern Lights package holidays which appeal to all ages and all types of holidaymaker.

Our location in Vesterålen - The heart of our northern lights adventures
Selecting Vesterålen as our operational base was a considered choice. Our location in Norway is between the famous Lofoten archipelago and lively Tromsø, it serves as the perfect backdrop for our tailored tours.

Thanks to it’s prime location beneath the auroral oval, we consider Vesterålen the best place to see the Northern Lights, with some of the most reliable Northern Lights displays which dance above the region’s stunning picturesque landscapes from September to April every year. On average we expect to see some aurora activity every other night during this period. We are also only an hour’s drive from the Lofoten Islands which make for great day and night excursions.

Despite our latitude of around 68º North we have a unique temperate climate compared to other locations under the auroral oval. This is due to our coastal proximity to the Gulf Stream, meaning that even in the depths of winter, the conditions remain relatively mild, enhancing the comfort of our guests’ aurora viewings. The same 68º North latitude in Alaska, Russia, or inland from us in Sweden or Finland is generally more that 15ºC colder in the winter and this difference makes a huge impact in choosing what clothing to wear and how cold is feels when waiting outside to see the Northern Lights.

Because of this milder climate, the landscape can vary dramatically across the region. From autumn hues to the crisp white of winter, Vesterålen promises a new perspective with every visit, compelling many of our guests to return at different times of the season.

How to get here?
We collect and return our guests from our local airport Harstad-Narvik (EVE) which has multiple daily connections between Oslo (OSL) with Norwegian and SAS. We also have pickup/drop off points in Narvik (for the Arctic Train connection to Sweden) and several of the Hurtigruten ports in the region.

Accommodation, meals & transport
Accommodation is either half board or full board and based in the Sortland (Vesterålen) or Leknes (Lofoten) Scandic Hotels. Meals consist of a continental buffet breakfast and dinners with locally sourced ingredients. Many of our trips also include lunches which are provided by our daytime activity partners.

What makes The Northern Lights Company trips different to other operators?
Enjoy the silence
Our choice of location is very quiet during the winter season. We choose to operate our trips away from busy, light polluted locations such as Tromsø. This means our guests visit a larger variety of stunning picturesque locations by day and by night, with the reassurance that they have the time to enjoy the scenery and take unspoilt photos without the tourist 'hustle and bustle' going on around them. Vesterålen and Lofoten are considered the most photogenic and beautiful parts of Northern Norway.

Small groups, BIG moments
Our small group trips run with a maximum of 8 guests. This allows us to give a much more personalised and private experience to our guests, as well as allowing us to reach locations other larger vehicles cannot.

Everyone welcome
Our trips cater for all ages and group types, from single travellers to honeymoon couples and family groups including children.

Aurora chasing every night
Other tour operator package holidays will typically include Aurora Chasing on 1 or 2 nights of a typical 4 or 5-night trip, charging extra for additional nights.

At The Northern Lights Company we maximise the chances of seeing the lights on all of our trips by including Aurora Chasing every single night.

Daytime delights: more than just lights
Our tours aren’t just about Aurora Chasing at night but also include enriching activities every day. From an exciting Eagle Safari and Sami Cultural Experience to the incredible scenic sightseeing daytrips in and around Vesterålen and Lofoten – each activity is carefully selected to augment our guests' Arctic adventures.

Amongst our activities is the unique opportunity to visit Andøya Space and Spaceship Aurora - Norway's only operational space centre – where Aurora research, through the launch of research rockets into the upper atmosphere, has been ongoing since the 60’s. This is a truly educational experience for all ages, where guests meet real life rocket scientists, travel to the edge of space on a simulated aurora research mission and learn about the science of the aurora borealis.

Food
Norway is known to be one of the most expensive countries in Europe and in Northern Norway food prices are particularly high. This is why many operators do not always include meals in their packages, introducing hidden costs that guests may not be expecting. All of our trips include breakfast and dinner and many excursions also include lunches.

Fully guided
From the first minute they arrive to last minute they leave all our guests will be accompanied by British Aurora Chaser guide, Chris Percival. Chris has a reputation for his determination and dedication in ensuring all his guests have the best experience possible. This also includes expert photography advice, whether you have a smartphone with night mode or the latest in mirrorless digital cameras.
