Norwegian Museum of Travel and Tourism – A journey through the history of Norwegian tourism

In the beautiful village of Balestrand, along the northern shore of the Sognefjord, lies the Norwegian Museum of Travel and Tourism. Here you can delve into the history of how Norway became one of the world’s most famous destinations.

The museum presents the development of Norwegian tourism, with a focus on Balestrand’s role in this history. Through interactive exhibitions, visitors learn about how tourism has influenced and shaped society, and what has made Norway an attractive travel destination. The museum is one of very few in the world that deal with the development of modern tourism, providing a unique experience for those interested in culture and history. The museum is housed in a spectacular building, with walls carved straight out of the bedrock. In the auditorium, you can experience short films related to travel and tourism, for example the thrilling documentary about Norwegian female aviation pioneer Gidsken Jakobsen. The museum also hosts alternating exhibitions.

We offer guided tours for both groups and individual visitors upon request. Our website provides an overview of which guided tours you may choose from.
