In Kristiansund, you’ll find Norways oldest Opera! Opera has been played here on these islands at the far end of the oceans gap in the Northwest since 1928.
In the 1800’s, Kristiansund was in the forefront in the production and export of klipfish, and while the dried and salted fish was sent throughout Europe, the people of Kristiansund brought culture back to the city. One of these was the grandiose theatrical form, Opera!
The opera in Kristiansund was established in 1928, which makes it Norway's oldest opera, and around 150 small and large performances are staged every year.
In addition to the year-round programme, the Opera in Kristiansund organizes "Operafestukene", an Opera-festival every year in February. The festival was established in 1971 and has since been an annual event in Kristiansund.
Today, the festival has a position as one of Norway's largest and most important festivals where opera is at the center! During the Opera Festival you can experience full-scale operas, operettas, musicals, concerts, lectures, and more.
