Overview

The Pilgrim Way at Romerike – the Saint Olav Ways to Trondheim
Once again you can walk along the old trails that the pilgrims of the Middle Ages followed on their way to the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The Saint Olav Ways is regarded as part of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. It provides a different hiking experience, whether you have one day at your disposal or wish to walk the whole trail to Trondheim. Starting points can be the Old Town of Oslo, Oslo airport Gardermoen, or anywhere along the trail.
Across the region of Romerike, the trail is recently signposted. You can walk through the municipalities of Skedsmo, Sørum, Ullensaker and Eidsvoll. A wide range of sleeping accommodations is offered to wanderers and pilgrims, from the most simple hostels in old farm houses to well equipped hotels. The trail runs through a manifold landscape of woods, creeks and lakes. But first and foremost it runs through the beautiful cultural landscape of Romerike, with high skies, rolling fields and well kept farms.
Along the Pilgrim Way there are three Medieval churches, of which two are devoted to Saint Olav. Other traces of the great saint of the Middle Ages are the Olav passage in Sørum and the Olav statue from Skedsmo church. The trail passes several burial fields from the Iron Age and the monumental burial mound Raknehaugen from the Migration Period. Raknehaugen is the biggest burial mound in the Nordic countries and is made up of soil and 75 000 logs! Past Raknehaugen the Pilgrim Way follows an ancient road that has probably been in use for at least 1 500 years. At Risebru the ancient road meets a stone bridge and the old main road to Trondheim, giving a glimpse of new and old road history. The Pilgrim Way passes the Eidsvoll building, where the Norwegian constitution was signed in 1814, and leads on to the county of Hedmark.
