The pole monolith in Gjøvik

Along the beautiful promenade in Gjøvik stands a truly unique landmark: the pole monolith. This 15-meter-high structure isn’t just a visual highlight—it’s also a proud monument to one of Norway’s most successful outdoor movements: "Stolpejakten" or in English, "The pole hunt".
A Tribute to a national movement
The pole monolith was built to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the pole hunt - a free, accessible outdoor activity that began right here in Gjøvik back in 2013. Bluntly explained it's about getting out and finding woode poles instead of traditional orienteering posts in more accessible surroundings, with a chance to win prices.
What started as a local initiative by the Gjø-Vard Orienteering Club has grown into a nationwide phenomenon with over 200,000 participants across nearly 200 municipalities at the time of writing!
The monolith stands as a powerful symbol of this journey - from a simple idea driven by local passion, to a national favorite. And what better place to showcase it than at the very starting point? You’ll find it just a short walk from downtown Gjøvik, surrounded by green spaces, swimming spots, and one of the most scenic walking paths in the region.
An eye-catching giant
The pole monolith is designed like a classic Stolpejakten pole - but super-sized:
• 15 meters tall
• 1 meter wide on each side
• Worth 300 points when scanned in the Stolpejakten app
It’s become a striking landmark along the lakefront, especially when lit up in the evening. Around it, you’ll find a cozy seating area with lighting - a great spot for a rest, a selfie, or even a lakeside picnic.
An interactive experience
The monolith isn’t just tall - it’s smart. An interactive screen shows live Stolpejakten stats, so you can see how many posts are being found all over the country.
