The Soot canal

Soot canal - Engebret Soot
This is the oldest system of locks in the country. It was designed and built under the guidance of Engebret Soot in 1847-49. The aim was to transport timber from the forests around the Mangen watercourse to the Fredriks watercourse. 16 locks were constructed in all from blocks of stone from the riverbed and made watertight with turf and planking. To get to the Soot canal take the Rv 21 from Skotterud through Vestmarka. At Monsrud, about 10 km from Vestmarka, take the exit to the left to the canal system
