The Trail Way - The Power Way
How do we utilize nature responsibly? How do we build a city? How do we harvest sustainably? These are important questions that you are challenged to reflect upon during this journey to and through Mo i Rana, the ironworks town set to become Norway’s green industrial capital. Experience the town, the food, the people, and the history on this package tour from The Trail Way.
Mo i Rana has almost always been an industrial town and has continuously been evolving. From mining, power production, coke production, and ironworks, to the world’s cleanest steelworks and Norway’s first battery factory. Just as the iron and steel in the industry have built up the city, so too have the city—and its people—been flexible and renewable, strong and sustainable, depending on what society needed. You will witness this determination, flexibility, and creativity in the city you are guided through on this two-day package from The Trail Way.
Day 1: Historical Walk and a Fine Dinner
The journey begins green and environmentally friendly, by train along the Nordland Line, from Trondheim to Mo i Rana. From the train station, you’ll take a short walk to the hotel named after the railway, namely Hotell Ole Tobias. From the hotel, you’ll enjoy a lovely audio-guided city walk. During this tour along the waterfront and through the old town, past the Havmannen statue and Jernbaneparken, you’ll learn even more about the city’s diverse history.
Today’s dinner is served at Brasserie 8622, one of Mo i Rana’s newest and best restaurants. Here, you’ll indulge in a delightful three-course dinner, and since the restaurant is just a stone’s throw from the hotel, you can safely enjoy the pleasant and relaxed atmosphere until closing time. Remember that the summer nights in the north are bright and long, perfect for taking your time.
Day 2: Science Center, Rana Museum, and tour of the Industrial Park
When you wake up at Hotell Ole Tobias, a good breakfast awaits you in your own “train compartment.” Several of the dining tables here are made like the compartments from the old train sets from the Nordland Line.
After breakfast, take a short and pleasant stroll down to the Nordland Science Center. Here, you’ll find a large and informative exhibition, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour with play and experimentation. The exhibitions are rooted in physics and natural science and build on much of the same science that is the foundation of industrial development in the region.
In the same building as the science center, you’ll find the Rana Museum, where you can explore a fine collection of natural history and exhibitions on the area’s Sami history, wartime history, and industrial history. Coming here from the science center is an exciting journey through time. You’ll see where we started and what we’ve built on, with the knowledge and experience we’ve gathered through hard work, setbacks, and progress.
When you’re done here, you’ll be taken on a guided tour through the Mo Industrial Park, where you’ll enter the heart of the industry. Here, you’ll see how tons of scrap iron are recycled and refined, and given new life as quality steel. A tour through this modern industrial facility marks the end of this journey through both time and place. Before you catch the train again, you might find room for a cup of coffee or a stroll in the city.
Feel free to take this opportunity to reflect on what we build with what nature provides us and the industry it creates. We build cities and communities. Jobs and homes. And that we must develop both ourselves and the industry in step with the times, as we always have and always will.
