The Trail Way - The River Way
Join us on an exciting journey through raw nature, with speed and excitement, salmon fishing, and authentic traditional food on the menu. Great natural experiences meet compelling storytelling in this package tour from The Trail Way, where you’ll experience how the river and forest once served both as way of travel and way of life.
In this three-day package from The Trail Way, you’ll join the locals in salmon fishing in the river, enjoy an exhilarating rafting trip down the Auster-Vefsna, and have a guided tour with traditional cooking in the museum buildings at Grane Rural Museum.
Day 1: Salmon Fishing and Traditional Food
The adventure begins as you board the train to Trofors, taking the Nordland Line through the beautiful natural areas of southern Helgeland. From the train window, you’ll see the great mountains, forests, and mountain lakes in these wilderness areas, and not least, the rivers that were once vital for livelihood and travel. The Trail Way’s audio guide will tell you more about this during your journey through the magnificent landscape.
At Trofors train station, you’ll be greeted by the hosts from Bakarstuo, the 160-year-old Nordland house by the river, which will be your home for these three days. The house has been renovated with modern amenities you need while preserving the original log walls and nostalgic decoration, giving the place a timeless atmosphere. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch made from local ingredients, while the hosts share stories about the area and its local history.
After lunch, the hosts will take you down to the riverbank to hunt for the mighty salmon! You’ll receive both equipment and training, giving you the best chance to catch a fish. It’s exciting if the fish bites, but even if it doesn’t, it’s relaxing and almost meditative to cast the rod while the river babbles by, just as it has for generations.
After the fishing trip, you’ll be served dinner, and then you can choose whether to spend the evening fishing more, cycling, or just relaxing.
Day 2: Rafting on Auster-Vefsna
The Auster-Vefsna river, with its beautiful and spectacular course, flows through narrow gorges, exciting rapids, and along beautiful, wilderness-rich banks. Safely guided by experienced, professional guides, you’ll get a taste of being explorers on a journey towards unknown lands.
You’ll have breakfast before the trip and lunch when you return. After that, the day is open until dinner, and you can fish, hike, swim, or just laze by the riverbank near the house. It’s quite an experience in itself.
Day 3: Tour of Grane Rural Museum
This is the last day at Bakarstuo, so after breakfast, you pack up and move on to Grane Rural Museum. The Rural Museum is one of the Helgeland Museum’s departments, consisting of cultural-historical buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Forestry and outland are the main themes of the exhibition, and a local guide will show you around and tell about the daily life of the farmers and loggers who lived here. You’ll also participate in making today’s lunch, prepared in an ancient method, in a cooking pit in the ground.
