The Trail Way - The Sami Way
At the foot of the majestic Saltfjellet, by the banks of the Ranelva river, you’ll find Storli Farm and Aernie; “the hearth”. Here, you’ll get a taste of life among the mountains under the Arctic Circle, as it was and is in Sami and local culture. This package tour from The Trail Way combines authentic food traditions with vibrant cultural storytelling.
In this 2-day package, you’ll journey by the Nordland Line to Mo i Rana, where you’ll be picked up at the station and driven up to Storli Farm and Aernie. Aernie means “the hearth” in Sami, serving as the gathering place for great food experiences, conversations, and stories. This is precisely what Anne-Berit and Toamma offer when you visit their Aernie.
Day 1: Journey into the Traditions
After the train ride from Trondheim, you arrive in Mo i Rana, at the innermost part of Ranfjorden, where the mountains and fjord meet, and where the mountain valleys towards Saltfjellet have their outlets. And it’s to these mountain valleys you’re headed, to Storli Farm and Aernie. You’ll be picked up at the station and have some free time on the farm before the evening’s dinner. Feel free to bring some snack food for the journey, so you can have a bite before dinner. Perhaps as a picnic on one of the hiking trails in the area.
The couple Anne Berit and Toamma welcome you at Storli Farm. The farm dates back to 1804, and Anne Berit and Toamma carry the cultural heritage from seven generations of farm life and Sami culture. They have preserved and kept this heritage alive, sharing it with great love, respect, and storytelling joy. You’ll experience it through the food they prepare from scratch, in the proper manner. And through the stories they tell, stemming from the culture and community they grew up in.
After finding peace in the luxury gamme (traditional Sami tent) that will be your home for the evening, and perhaps exploring one of the local hiking trails, you’ll be served a delicious three-course dinner. It’s based on the traditional food of the local farming culture and the area’s Sami food traditions.
Day 2: A Day in the Traditions
After a good night’s sleep to the burbling of the river, a breakfast basket full of delicious local food awaits. You can enjoy this at your own pace, inside the cozy gamme or outdoors. After breakfast, Anne Berit and Toamma take you deeper into Sami culture. You’ll participate in baking the Sami bread “laejpie”, practice lasso throwing, and hear and learn about the Sami singing form, joik.
