The War Cemetery at Ørmelen

– A Story of Courage and Compassion
The War Cemetery at Ørmelen is a significant memorial honouring the 29 Russian prisoners of war who lost their lives in Verdal during the winter of 1945. After a brutal journey in unheated freight cars and inhumane conditions in the German labour camp, they were laid to rest here.
The monument, erected in 1946 by the local community, bears the names and dates of death of those who perished. It serves as a place for reflection, reminding visitors of the consequences of war and the bravery of locals who defied orders to assist the prisoners.
