History
The main house, called Valentinsenhuset, was built in 1855 on the Risøy island. The builder was John Valentinsen (1821 - 1900) from Rosendal. He came to Haugesund in the 1840s and quickly established himself as one of the largest sailboat owners and herring producers. As a result, he is often regarded as one of the city’s founders. After staying 7-8 years on Risøy, he decided to move to Haugesund (which is on the mainland). John also moved the house by rebuilding it in Haugesund, and in 1864 it was ready for occupancy. The house was built with a classical style, with rich details that are still largely intact today.
