A 6 km route in the footsteps of the refugees under second world war.

Timian route, Marker - 6 km.

Along the swedish border, there were many refugee routes where couriers followed refugees, transported intelligence material, money, weapons, ammunition and documents, at the risk of their own lives during the Second World War. Refugee Route is the term for a walk along one of the routes used by couriers and refugee escorts during the Second World War. The Timian route is one of the most significant routes in the whole of southern Norway. It is a marked historical walking route from Skullerud near Oslo and up to the national border. This was a strictly secret route to milorg. The route was established in 1943 and was very active throughout the occupation period - 1945. The route was served by selected couriers, about 25-30 people.

Around 50,000 Norwegians fled to Sweden during the Second World War. 250-300 people of these were escorted along the courier route Timian. On the eastern side of Øyern, several different refugee routes from different parts of Eastern Norway met, and the refugees were escorted further towards Sweden. Many of those who fled Oslo were transported by car or bus for some distance on the way. A few were driven almost all the way to the border, but most had a long and dangerous journey over several days before they got there. Today's refugee route follows a route we know was used by many.

If you follow the given coordinates, you will find a small car park along fv 21 - Rømskogveien.

On the other side of fv 21 the route begins, it is signposted and blue marked. You pass Lysingtjern, where it is nice to take a short trip down to the lake and take a breather on the ground and just enjoy nature. The route is not long, approx. 6 km trip - but it's nice to sit down and enjoy the silence and the beautiful pond.

Follow signs and blue markings. You pass a large stone on the trail marked as a sacrificial stone. When you reach a road, follow it for just a few meters before entering the forest again on the other side of the road.
Here it will be an older forest, with a mossy cover. You will now soon hear the waterfall if there is a lot of water flow in the river.

Forward by the river - you pass over. The river is the border between Norway and Sweden. If you follow the river a few meters south, you will see a large stone at the top of the waterfall - Grindforssteinen. This has a royal inscription on both sides of the stone. This is also boundary stone no. 38. When the water flow is high, there is a nice little waterfall.

After viewing the waterfall, turn around and continue on the path from the river up approx. 50 meters to a small place called Grindforsmoen. Today's route ends here.
