Trolldalen in Bamble lies hidden away behind islets and rocks approx.1 km from Valle.
Trolldalen lies hidden away behind islets and rocks.
The area is just 1 km from Valle, right out on the coast, and is accessible from Valleveien and by sea. Here you can see the remains of the Germans’ impressive WW2 fortifications. Bunkers, trenches and gun emplacements can still be viewed at close quarters.
Many people believe the fort was built here as a result of a navigational error by the Germans: The story goes that it should actually have been built at another Trolldalen, near Kristiansand. There are good views from the top across the archipelago separating the municipalities of Bamble and Kragerø. The islands of Stråholmen and Jomfruland are also clearly visible from here.
Access/parking: Trolldalen near Valle, Bamble, Telemark.
Turn off the E18 at Åby and follow the signs towards Valle. Park in the marked parking bays along Valleveien and walk back to the sign to Trolldalen. Walk down the road towards the sea and turn off onto the gravel road to the right marked ‘Trolldalen’. You’ll reach the fort after approx. 250 m. The terrain is not suitable for wheelchairs/pushchairs and can also be difficult for those who are unsteady on their feet.
WC/amenities: The nearest shop/café/WC is at Valle.
