The Valdres Folkemuseum in Fagernes was founded in 1901 and is among the largest open air museums in the country, situated beautifully on the bank of Lake Strandefjorden. Today the museum has more than 100 old buildings and around 20.000 items in its collection. A unique atmosphere tells about life in earlier times. The museum focuses especially on folk music and instruments, folk costumes and the conservation of historical buildings.
Valdres Folkemuseum during the year
You can walk around the museum grounds and explore on your own, or you can join a guided tour. During summer, pigs, hens, sheep and cattle are on free range grazing on the museum's summer farm. There is a natural path and different educational programs and events which are communicated through the museum's event calendar. In December a visit to the traditional pre-Christmas event Skarke with its Christmas market is recommended.
The museum's café
At the museum's café Munkekroen you will meet friendly and serviceminded staff with long experience in gastronomy. Enjoy a homemade dish of delicious, regional products. You can read more here.
The museum shop
In the museum shop you can find products that are connected to the cultural heritage of the Valdres region, such as candy just as it was made in the old days, traditional knitwear and knitting patterns, cooking books, silver jewelry, ceramics and woodwork. You can read more here.
Natural path
A 1.7 kilometer long walking path with information boards about the nature on the peninsula and forestry history in the Valdres region leads along the water's edge around the peninsula.
