The Valdres Folkemuseum in Fagernes was founded in 1901. The first house in the collections was rebuilt in 1906. Today the museum contents nearly 100 houses and constructions, around 20.000 items, and is the fourth largest open air museum of Norway.
The new visitors center has a souvenir shop, exhibits, banquet room/conference room facilities and a café.
The Valdres Folk Museum has a permanent exhibit of Norwegian folk costumes ("bunad"), the biggest collection in Norway, as well as arts/crafts from Valdres.
In the main season, there are guided tours around the museum several times a day and in many languages. Young people play traditional music instruments such as ”langeleik” and the Hardanger fiddle, and perform local Valdres folk dances. The Valdres Folk Museum is an amazing playground. There are animals on the farm, you can jump in the hay, fry local pancakes and play old games.
