Waldehuset - Museum & Cafè

Ålesund’s miracle house from 1904 – today a living museum and café with a strong story to tell.
Waldehuset is located in the centre of Ålesund and is known as the house that miraculously survived the great town fire of 1904. According to local stories, the preacher Waldemar Anderssen received a message from God telling him to stay in the house and trust that it would be spared – even as the flames raged all around. Against all odds, Waldehuset stood untouched while the city around it lay in ruins, and today it remains one of Ålesund’s most distinctive cultural landmarks.
Waldehuset todayToday, Waldehuset is a small museum run by a dedicated group of volunteers. Here you can hear the moving story of how the house survived the fire and see the interior just as it looked over a hundred years ago. In the café, you can enjoy a cup of coffee, waffles or a light snack – right in the middle of this story of faith, hope and a small miracle in the art nouveau town of Ålesund.
Waldehuset is open parts of the year and welcomes individual visitors and groups by appointment.
