Fjord Norway Vestland BERGEN

Walking down from Fløyen til Bergen city centre

A walk that's suitable for all! This is a golden opportunity to photograph the best that Bergen has to offer, assuring you of a great view.

If steep climbs are not for you, you can take the Fløibanen funicular up to the top, and walk down to central Bergen, as easy as that. A very popular walk suitable for people of all ages, this takes around 1 hour (or less if you are a fast walker). Needless to say, you can walk up to Fløyen too — it just takes a bit longer.

If you have a stroller or buggy, or young children, it’s no problem — you’ll easily get a place for the buggy on the Fløibanen, and the walk down to Bergen centre is child’s play.

If you want to take the Fløibanen some of the way down as well, you can hop off at one of the middle stations, such as Fjellveien, and do the last bit of the the journey on foot. This is especially useful in the winter, when it can easily get icy up top. In fact, taking the Fløibanen halfway down from the top makes the journey easier year round.

On this walk you will have a golden opportunity to take great photographs, due to the fantastic view over the city and its charming old wooden buildings.

The route winds its way down from the mountain with many twists and turns, but it’s very easy to find your way. On your way down, make sure you leave plenty of time to relax on one of the many benches along the route. They are placed so that you can really take in the great view.

When you are almost at the bottom, you’ll set eyes on the lovely Skansedammen. In winter it’s frequented by people going ice skating. In the summer many people picnic on the grass around the beautiful lake. Maybe you could round off your walk with a picnic too?

If you like walking in the mountains, we also recommend these hikes around Bergen’s seven hills.
