The Skålatårnet tower is located 1843 metres above sea level and has been a welcoming sight for tired trekkers for more than a century. Now, the iconic building is about to get a neighbour.
A real icon of Fjord Norway and one of the most unique self-serviced cabins in the world. Skålatårnet – the tower at the top of mount Skåla – has been used for more than 100 years by Norwegian and foreign travellers.
The tower was built in the 1890s and is used by people seeking shelter, food and a place to sleep after having conquered Norway’s longest continuous uphill.
Now, there’s a need for more beds, as the number of visitors has skyrocketed in the last few years.
That’s why Skålatårnet is about to be joined by a brand new self-serviced cabin, located right next to the iconic tower.
“It will be an awesome building, and a unique cabin with stunning views of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. From the loft you can see right down to the lake Lovatnet”, explains Helene Ødven, general manager for the Bergen and Hordalan branch of The Norwegian Trekking Association.

The official opening will be on October 10, and in order to book you need to go to the Norwegian Trekking Assiciation’s website.
The new cabin is not meant to overshadow its older neighbour, and is located somewhat discretely just below the tower. The architect Eilif Bjørge’s vision has been to design a building that reminds you of a bird of prey that is about to fly.
The budget is 6,1 million kroner (660.000 EUR), and 20 people will be able to sleep in the cabin at any time.
