Oslo restaurant Maaemo keeps its three stars in this year’s edition of the prestigious guide, while Galt joins the exclusive club with its first Michelin star ever.
Six Norwegian restaurants were included among the crème de la crème when the best Nordic eateries were revealed in Denmark this afternoon.
At the very top of the list is still Maaemo with three stars. And in the wake of Esben Holmboe Bangs successful restaurant in Oslo, five other essential Norwegian places for foodies follow.
In the culinary world, no distinction is more honorable than being included in the Michelin Guide, which was published in its first edition in 1900.
The publication – the brainchild of tyre manufacturing brothers André and Edouard Michelin – started out as a practical guide for motorists in France. But from the 1930s onwards, the guide was geographically expanded and thematically narrowed, with an annual distribution of stars to Europe’s greatest restaurants.
Three stars in Guide Michelin means that the restaurant is “worth a special journey”, two stars signifies that the food is “worth a detour”, and one star suggests “a very good restaurant in its category”.
Today, the crowning of the prime Nordic restaurants took place in a grand ceremony at the Copenhagen City Hall Tower. Norway is featured with five eateries in the guide, in addition to Maaemo, which along with Danish restaurant Geranium and Stockholm's Frantzèn is the only one in the Nordics with three stars.
Statholdergaarden keeps the star they’ve held onto for 20 years, while Kontrast, Sabi Omakase and Re-Naa continues the proud tradition they’ve been part of for the last couple of years.
The newcomer in this exclusive company is the Oslo restaurant Galt. Led by Swedish head chef Björn Svensson, this gourmet palace opened in 2017, but its rustic take on Nordic cuisine has already made waves in the Norwegian food community.
