They are the best known and most highly respected of all restaurant ratings. In Norway as well as the Nordic countries chefs and restaurant owners know that a single star can mean the difference between a moderate sucess and a full house every night.
Luckily, the Michelin guide 2016 came with good news for Norwegian chefs. First of all, restaurant Maaemo in Oslo was awarded three stars (an upgrade from two stars in last years guide). This is the first time a Norwegian restaurant has been given this many stars in the guide.
Also well worth noticing is the one star to Re-Naa in Stavanger, run by the Norwegian chef Sven Erik Renaa. This is seen as an acknowledgement of the fact that a lot of exciting things are happening in restaurants outside of Oslo as well. Another newcomer is Kontrast in Oslo, a gastro-bistro located in the culinary centre of Vulkan in Oslo.

Sven Erik Renaa is a prize winning Norwegian top chef, whose merits include the title of Cook of the Year (twice), Chef of the Year, and for many years Manager of the Norwegian national Culinary Team, who achieved the title of Olympic Champions in Erfurt 2008. Sven Erik Renaa has also published several renowned cookery books.
Statholdergaarden is Bernt Stiansen's gourmet restaurant. In 1993 Stiansen became Norway's first culinary arts world champion. The restaurant has quite unique interior design and roots from the 1600s.
Gastro-bistro at Vulkan with a modern kitchen that creates new dishes every day based on the best Norwegian and organic ingredients available.
The kitchen at Fauna is Nordic and innovative. The restaurant is modern and welcoming, with a partially open kitchen that creates a more relaxed atmosphere than you find at many other gourmet restaurants.
