Three out of five young Norwegians opt for a mountain holiday

The Norwegian word for mountain is “fjell”. Hence the “fjellfie” trend on social media that you can’t miss in Norway this summer.

A whopping 58 per cent of Norwegians aged 15 to 29 recently stated in a Gallup poll that they either had been or were planning to go to the mountains this summer. That’s three out of five in the age group.

The achievement of scaling a mountain is then typically shared on social media with a mountain selfie – or “fjellfie”. In short: The mountains have become trendy indeed.

“We’re seeing that posting photos from beautiful walks on social media gives status, and now ‘everyone’ are suddenly doing at least one hike during the summer holidays,” said Ingvild Lundberg Bakke from the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) to the newspaper Adresseavisen (article in Norwegian only).

Last week, we wrote that there has been a record-breaking summer in the Norwegian mountains in general. The DNT-owned cabins registered nearly 40 000 sleepover visits.

The trend among youth and “twentysomethings” are part of the explanation. The number of young DNT members (13–26 years of age) increased by 13.8 per cent since last summer, now numbering 35 000.

Last week, the newspaper VOL (article in Norwegian only) met Christina Jacobsen (25) and Hannah Tomren Fredriksen (26) trekking in the hills of Vesterålen. They confirmed that they pull out their smartphone cameras whenever they reach a peak.

“When we reach a mountain top, we’re good at documenting it, with Snapchat and Instagram,” Jacobsen said. “Everyone should see it, even though they probably get annoyed. In the end, it could motivate them to get out here themselves.”

Berit Skog, associate professor and researcher at the Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU in Trondheim, confirms the trend. She agrees that the pictures may have a positive, inspiring effect:

“People get to see how amazing it is, and it may be positive and health promoting,” she said to Adressa.

Moreover, nothing suggests that the trend is a fluke.

“We believe that the number of young people who’ll pack for a mountain hike just as readily as they pack their gym bag will only increase going forward,” says Bakke at DNT.
