Rallarmuseum Finse
The Rallar Museum is located in the Østre Lokstall at Finse. Here, you can see photos and an exhibition about the history of the railway construction from 1894-1909.
The museum is open in the summer from early July until mid-September.
The following text is taken from www.rallarmuseet.no: The museum's exhibition "Norway's Breakthrough to the Future" showcases the planning and construction of the Bergen Line from 1871 to its opening in 1909. In the exhibition, you can view old photographs and films about the operation of the railway and the tourist life, and you can listen to songs about the laborers' lives and barracks life. The exhibition includes an authentic smithy and a construction barracks. The exhibition "The Battle Against the Snow" displays historical snow-clearing equipment and tells the story of how the high mountain section was kept open throughout the winter.
The Rallar Museum Foundation at Finse was established on 2.09.1986 by Finse Vell, NSB, Finse 1222, Ulvik Herad, and the Norwegian Railway Club. The purpose is to pass on the unique history of the high mountain section of the Bergen Line to future generations. The museum opened in 1990, and new exhibitions were opened in 2009.
Since the summer of 1992, the museum has operated the Rallar Café with an exhibition about the life of the track-watchers at Fagernut Watchman's Residence, which is located at 1310 meters above sea level, 10 km west of Finse along the Rallar Road.
At the watchman's residences at Fagernut, 10 km west of Finse, and Oksebotn, 4 km east, there are cafés offering waffles, coffee, soft drinks, etc. (closed in winter).
