Experience the national parks or try some of the activities that Geilo offers in summer. 


Geilo an accessible starting point for hiking in the mountains, whether you want to walk from the town center, drive by car or take the train to start your trip in the middle of the mountains.

Take a short afternoon trip by riding the chairlift up to the national park views or walk across Hardangervidda national park fraom Geilo to Western Norway.

Den Norske Turistforening (The Norwegian Trekking Association) has a network of marked trails that criss-cross the mountains. The trails follows the high areas, so you have fantastic views all the way. View interactive map on Ut.no

From Prestholtseter walk the sherpa stairs up to Skarvsenden on Hallingskarvet, 1705 meters above sea level. The stairs are made by Nepalese traditions to fit the terrain and to make it easier to walk into the national park while protecting the landscape.

For an extra dimension to your experience, a guided tour is recommended. Hardangervidda Mountain Guiding offers hiking tours with an experienced guide, focusing on nature and geology or philosophy and history.


Try downhill biking or take a leisurely family outing. Geilo offers many cycling opportunities. In Geilo Downhill Park, ride the chairlift up and bike down on trails in the park. You can choose between rough and steep single tracks or easy dirt roads. The park has two two new downhill trails for children.

The trail "Ustedalsfjorden Tour" goes out from the center and suitable for family trips and training rounds. Stop by Fekjo culture and heritage park or take a bath on the fine sand beach.

Rallarvegen - the navvy road, was built as a road for the Bergen Railway and was finished in 1902. It was selected as voted Norway's finest bike route by the Norwgian Cyclists' Association. Rallarvegen is 80 km long and runs from Haugastøl to Finse, Hallingskeid, Myrdal and Flåm. If you want to bring your own bike you can do so ont the Cycling Train that departs daily during summer. You can also rent a bike at Haugastøl, Finse or in Geilo.

Rafting and river sports

Numedalslågen, one of Northern Europe's best rafting rivers, runs thorough Dagali, close to Geilo. The river comes straight from the Hardangervidda National Park and in the pristine waters you can try river rafting. There are tours for all levels, from quiet family trips to extreme tours in the toughest rapids. You can borrow a wetsuit and all necessary safety equipment.

If you want even closer contact with the water, try river boarding, where you lie on a surf board and maneuver down the river, or duckies, an inflatable canoe with room for two.

Dagali is also world famous for its kayaking and is a favorite destination for paddlers from all over Europe. In July the Dagali River Festival is held, with international competitions in white water rafting and kayaking.

It is possible to rent a kayak and get instruction throughout the summer.

Horseback riding 

Geilo has two equestrian centers; Geilo Hestesenter og Geilo Aktivitetessenter/Stall Brusletto. Choose from lead line riding for children to weeklong trips in the mountains on safe horses suitable for both beginners and experienced riders. Riding in the Hardangervidda mountains and surrounding areas is an experience you will remember for a long time.

High ropes courses,  zip lines and climbing

Geilo area has several high ropes courses to offer. Geilo High Ropes Course is located near the center of Geilo and offers a large park with 31 obstacles for youth and adults, as well as the smaller Troll Park for kids.

Open for drop in every day during the summer holidays and school half-term holiday, or on weekends and by appointment.

In Hallingdal Holiday Park in Ål you can find the High and Low climbing park which has four trails with different difficulty levels, from easy to difficult. The park is open daily during the summer season, from April to October.

In Dagali you can try to abseil down a 40 meter high rock wall. Dare to trust the rope expecting a great experience awaits you.

All participants receive in-depth training course and required safety equipment.

For the kids

Hallingdal Holiday Park offers a large indoor and outdoor play area, as well as a small farm for children. You can meet alpacas, cuddle rabbits, ride a pony or drive a tractor. The also have a large indoor and outdoor playground.

Many of activity providers have separate activities for children, how about trying family rafting, the troll park in Geilo (high ropes course for the little ones), pony trekking or go karting? In a hot summer you can bathe in Geilo Beach or a lake in the mountains. By Ustedalsfjorden, near downtown, is a lovely sandy beach.

Geilo Downhill Park offers two new courses for children from 5 years and would you like to go hiking there are plenty of easy trails suitable for the smallest. A trip on the chairlift is also an exciting experience.


Langedrag Nature Park is an hour's drive from Geilo. Here you can have a close encounter with Norwegian animals such as wolves, lynx, moose, reindeer and Arctic foxes. Greet animals or participate in the daily work in barns and stables.

A little further away is Bjørneparken and the Predator Center. In Bjørneparken you can meet brown bears and other, Norwegian animals. Stop by the Bear Park on the way to or from Geilo.

Motor activities


Dagaliopplevelsers motor center lies in Dagali Airport and offers go karting and car slalom. The go kart track have drop-in during school holidays, otherwise you should book in advance. The other motor activities must be pre-booked.
