Travel back in time to the beautiful and exciting open-air museum in Nesbyen.

Hallingdal Museum in Nesbyen, founded in 1899, is beautifully situated in scenic surroundings by Rukkedøla river. This open-air museum, which is one of the oldest in Norway, has 30 antique buildings and approx. 30,000 objects from the entire Hallingdals region. The legendary "Staveloftet" from Ål was built around year 1340 and is today one of the country's best preserved wooden houses from the Middle Ages.

Through various events, theme days and exhibitions, the museum facilitates experiences and knowledge. In addition, the museum is open mostly throughout the year, and visitors can enter many of the historical buildings and read about their stories. In the Tandberg building you can experience a war exhibition from the national front 1940-1945. In the reception building you can also visit the regular exhibitions.

Every Wednesday from the fist of July to the beginning of August, visitors can watch end try out old handicraft traditions. The old grocery store is open and offers a varied selection of traditional goods. The play about "The Girl in Staveloftet" tells the story of the girl who survived the Black Plague these Wednesdays in the summer.

Hallingdal Museum also has a great gift shop with historical books and local crafts.
