A 20 minutes scenic mini cruise! A great way to see the Unesco site Bryggen from the seaside on your way to Norwegian Museum of Fisheries.
Are you short on time, or just want to see the harbour from the seaside? Join this mini cruise with the historic ferry, Beffen. Sail past the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bryggen, Håkon's Hall and the wharfside warehouses to the picturesque Norwegian Fisheries Museum in Sandviken. The trip gives plenty of great photo opportunities. The museum enjoys a beautiful waterside location, and offers different outdoor activities. Rent a rowing boat for the whole family or let the children paddle a kayak in the canals around the museum. If you book a return ticket, the entry to the Norwegian Fisheries Museum is included! How to get back to the city center: To return to the city center you can either take the ferry back, or take a scenic walk through Sandviken or Bergenhus Fortress. The walk takes approximately 20 minutes. There is also a bus to the city center right outside the museum. About the museum: The 18th century wharfside warehouses with log timber walls hide an exciting and dynamic museum, with activities for both children and adults. Dive deep into the fascinating history of the Norwegian coast and its fisheries, which have shaped modern Norway – the incredible growth of the herring fisheries and cod fishing in Lofoten. Rebellions, conflicts and shipwrecks. The dried fish trade and the sardine industry. Last but not least: how fish farming has developed from its humble beginning in the 1970s into Norway’s second largest export industry.
Several rooms contain temporary exhibitions based on the museum’s rich collections of fishing boat engines, display of old building techniques, herring processing and the stock fish trade. In the two original merchant’s offices you can see some of the best preserved warehouse wall paintings in Bergen, and learn more about the story behind them.
The museum, two warehouses joined by covered bridges, are built out into the sea on wooden foundations, and the original canals between them have been recreated. All of the warehouses in Sandviken were like this in the 19th century, when the area was referred to as the “Venice of the North”.
