Experience hiking, cycling, boat trip, - from the fjord and valleys, to the high mountains outside Bergen. Local guide tells you about culture and history.
A roundtrip from Bergen brimming with activity, nature and culture!
In Matre, a good hour north of Bergen, you can go on a cycling trip, a mountain walk and a boat trip among deep valleys and wide mountain expanses. En route, you will discover how nature is at the root of Norway's development – farming, tourism, hydroelectric power, industrialisation, fishing, the wartime resistance and rural development. We visit the World War II Bjørn West Museum, climb the steep stone steps of Stegane, and visit Kringlebotn mountain farm and Stordalen Fjellstove (mountain lodge).
The tour starts at the Bjørn West Museum in Matre at 9.30. After a briefing and a film, we cycle up the Matresdalen valley for 20 minutes to Hummelfossen waterfall. From there, we climb the steep, historical stone steps called Stegane up to Hummelvatnet lake, which takes around 30 minutes. There, you will see some huge potholes before enjoying lunch.
Surrounded by precipitous mountainsides, we cross Hummelvatnet lake in an open boat. The boat trip takes about 20 minutes. We then continue on foot to an abandoned mountain farm called Kringlebotn.
After a break, we walk up to an altitude of 700 metres, the highest point on the tour. Once at the top, you will have plenty of time to take photos and enjoy the wonderful views. The walk continues through open mountain terrain for around three hours, before we arrive at Stordalen lodge, where we eat dinner. After finishing our meal with dessert and coffee, we cycle for about an hour back down to Matre.
It is also possible to extend the tour by staying overnight at Stordalen. If you book online, please write in the comments field that you want to stay overnight at the lodge, and we will contact you and quote you a price if they have capacity. If you stay overnight at Stordalen, you continue the tour on your own from the lodge back down to Matre the next day.
