By the Otterstad information board you are at the starting point of a route stretching far up through the Modalen valley. It starts off on a walking path alongside the river approx. 2 km until you reach Øvraneset where a sign points towards Helland. This first part is adapted for use of wheelchair. The stretch has clearly visible signs of the valleys wild life. The deer are grazing in the hillsides and meadows here, and if you are lucky you can get a glimpse of them – your best chance for this is early in the morning or in the evening by sunset.

By the end of the gravel path the route continues to the left over a footbridge, the path narrows and is a bit hilly before you arrive at a large meadow. At the end of the meadow you have to cross a tributary by the sill, usually not a problem at normal water flow. Shortly after you will find a bridge to your right, and you can choose to cross it and take the main road back to the center of Mo. The hiking path continues straight forward, and after approx. 1 km you arrive by Helland with the local kindergarten, a small residential area and some farms. At the crossroads after 50 meters on asphalt you have the option to turn left and follow a gravel road up and into the beautiful Helland valley, which takes you to the mountain farm Bleidalen and all the way up to the lake Skjerjavatnet at 850 metres above sea level. There is also a marked path to the mountain farm Tverradalen from this road.

The main route continues a short stretch along the asphalt road. By the bridge you soon arrive at, you will find an information board describing the next lap on this route – from Helland via Almelid to Farestveit. It is possible to go by bike all the way from Otterstad to Farestveit, but you should have a mountain bike and be prepared to get off and lead it by hand some places.
