A walk along the coastal path from Herdlevær to Skogsøytuva (mound) and Skogsøy’s environmentally protected area. The tour starts at Herdlevær and winds along the coast to Skogsøytuva. There’s parking by the side of the road, just before the bridge to Herdlevær.
Follow the path along the bay towards the sea. Sheep graze here throughout the year, so remember to keep your dog on a lead and please close the gate.
Along the path there are spectacular views of the ocean to the west. From Skogsøytuva you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view and the cairn is a popular place to sit and watch the power of the ocean. Remember to keep a safe distance as the waves can travel a long way into the coast. Skogsøy is a popular place for bird watching, particularly to study the autumn and spring migration.
From Skogsøytuva there is a small unmarked path over rocks and into the environmentally protected area. The area is excellent for fishing and swimming. There are several historical relics and the remains of old settlements. There are good places for setting up camp. For an alternative roundtrip, take the eastern path back to Herdlevær. It can get a bit marshy so remember to wear good shoes.
