Flåøya recreational area

Flåøya is a gem of a peninsula located at Flå in the Sunndalsfjorden. Today, Flåøya is designated as a recreational area and is a popular destination for enjoying the outdoors.
Flåøya boasts an interesting cultural landscape with traces of human activity dating from the Stone Age to the present day. During the Iron Age, Flå was centrally located in the Sunndal Fjord, and there are numerous graves on the island from the Migration Period through the Viking Age. Many of these graves contain grave goods and are marked with signage in German, English, and Norwegian.
At the southern tip of Flåøya (farthest from the jetty/entry to the island, to the left), there is a nice outdoor area with seating and mooring possibilities for boats.
In this area, you can also find the youngest graves on the island, dating from the Viking Age. On the highest peaks of the island lie the oldest graves on Flåøya, with findings from the Migration Period. There are also excellent views overlooking both out to sea and inland towards the fjord.
From Sunndalsøra, follow road rv 70 towards Kristiansund. Take the exit from rv 70 just after the Oppdølstrand Tunnel towards Opdøl. Follow the road along the fjord to Flå, approximately 5 km. There is parking about 100 meters from Flå farm. From the parking area, it is a short walk over to Flåøya, where there are trails around the island.
