Kulisteinen - a stone with a runic inscription
The Kuli Stone is perhaps the most famous runestone in Norway. It is one of the earliest testimonies of Christianity in the country.
A replica of the Kuli Stone was erected in 1969, believed to stand where the original once stood.
Raising stones as memorials is an ancient pre-Christian custom. Today, the stone bears the inscription: “Tore and Halvard raised this stone in memory of Ulv… Christianity had been in Norway for twelve winters…”
This is the first known use of the name Norway on Norwegian soil. There are various theories about the context in which the Kuli Stone was raised, most likely in the early 11th century.
