The Nekton Aquaculture Visitor Centre is located in the Gurisentret on Edøy and the island of Smøla. Join a rib boat and experience life at the edge of the fish farms!

Smøla

North of Kristiansund lies the island of Smøla surrounded by thousands of islands, islets, and reefs. The place where the sea meets the sky, it's the realm of sea eagles and a paradise for paddlers and fishermen.

Visitor Facilities

The best place to learn about the Norwegian aquaculture industry is at a fish farm. Join a guided tour by RIB to a visitor facility in normal operation. Here, you'll get an insight into how salmon farming works. What technology does the industry use? What is a smolt, and what is the journey from roe to finished product like? What does salmon feed smell like?

Rib tour to the fish farm

During the summer holidays, fixed guided tours by RIB are offered out to the fish farm's home – the edge of the fish farms. Tours are every Wednesday and Thursday at 14:00 from the Gurisentret on Edøy and every Thursday at 10:00 from the pier in Kristiansund. Open for groups on other days and times.

The entire RIB tour lasts about 1.5 hours, and you will be provided with a suit, vest, and goggles before receiving safety instructions. The journey to the viewing facility takes about 15 minutes by RIB. There, you will receive an introduction to the aquaculture industry on board the raft, before visiting the edge of the fish pen to see the discussed practices in action. You will have the opportunity to feed the fish and ask questions.

Guided Tour

All activities are accompanied by knowledgeable guides.

There are a variety of types of programs throughout the year. If you want a tailored journey into the world of salmon, it can be arranged by contacting the center in advance.
